2016 Fall Grants
The Foundation is expanding and has awarded two operational grants, one to Montgomery Blair High School and the second to Takoma Elementary PTO. An additional 15 project grants were awarded as well.
Montgomery Blair High School Band and Orchestra
Support of general operating funds for the band and orchestra at Montgomery Blair High School. Funds would be used for the maintenance, repair, reconditioning, and purchase of musical Blair High School. Funds would be used for the maintenance, repair, reconditioning, and purchase of musical instruments, music instruction software and hardware, performance audio equipment, sheet music, contest entrance fees, transportation expenses, band uniforms, and festival and trip expenses.
Takoma Education Campus Parent Teacher Organization Takoma Elementary
Takoma Elementary is in many ways the mirror of Takoma Park Elementary and faces many of the same challenges. The schools has been going through changes and the TECPTO is working on building a stronger PTO. Getting more parents involved in the school.
Ayuda: Accessing Justice: Supporting Immigrants from the Takoma Community
To help cultivate and leverage relationships with Takoma Park civic and governmental organizations so that low income immigrants can learn about services provided.
Carpe Diem: Arts, African Arts, Culture and Education Academy
The African Arts, Culture and Education (ACE) Academy is an after-school educational and cultural enrichment program for 1st-5th graders at Essex House and Park Montgomery apartment houses in Silver Spring and Takoma Park, Maryland.
Cub Scout Pack 33: A Year of Scouting
Pack 33 will defray the costs of “A Year of Scouting” program for low-income families in Takoma Park, who might not otherwise be able to participate in either the year-long Scouting program and/or summer camp
Difference Makers Inc.: Snow Angels Equipment
The Takoma Park Difference Makers use the grant to purchase equipment for the Snow Angel’s snow removal program and our Global Youth Services program.
East Silver Spring ES PTA: STEaM and Learning on Cold Winter’s Days
Funds will help assemble six portable carts for students to use during indoor recess in order to foster creativity, curiosity, and learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, STE(a)M. Many of the activities and tools for the STE(a)M carts would be solicited from the school community as in-kind donations in order to demonstrate our community’s commitment to sustainability of the project.
Eastern Middle School PTSA: Authors Visit
The entire sixth grade at EMS is reading Red Scarf an autobiographic book on the Cultural Revolution in China. This grant is to help bring the author to speak to the students bringing this story alive.
Essex House Apartments Tenants’ Association: Life Skill Training
An eight session Life Skills training for middle school youth who live in Essex House Apartments, with an invitation to others the same age in the nearby apartments, Maple View, Parkview Towers, and Maple Avenue Tower.
Free Minds Book Club and Writing Workshop: 100 Volunteers
To recruit 100 new volunteers during 2017 to participate in a bi-monthly “write night” designed to create a bridge of understanding between Takoma park residences and youth incarcerated in the DC jail.
Impact Silver Spring: Flower Avenue Apartments
Impact’s primary goal is to create a high quality place to live by transforming the existing cultural form one of distrust, fear and division to one of aspiration, trust and connection in the Flower Branch community.
Montgomery Blair High School: Blair Network Communications
This grant is to help buy five new sets of cameras and tripod for the Intro to TV/Film production class which will allow additional students to take the class and create more complex productions.
Montgomery Blair High School: No Labels Diversity Club
Students will be sent to a two-day training A World of Difference Anti-Bias Training. The training enables the students to lead classroom workshops throughout the school and well as to the staff.
Pinecrest Community Association: Movie Nights
To help purchase equipment to show films in the neighborhood. This is bringing the neighborhood to together.
Real Food for Kids – Montgomery: Parent and Community Advocacy for a strong MCPS Wellness Policy.
To bring food cooked from starch in either the central kitchen of the individual schools, putting salad bars in every school, reducing sugar in school foods and removing junk food marketing.
Rolling Terrace Elementary PTA: Title 1 Schools College Saving Challenge
A law passed by the MD legislature in 2016 (HB 1014) provides new incentives for low and moderate income families to invest in the state’s college savings accounts via a $250 annual matching grant, in return for contributing more than $25/year. The grant would organize meeting to explain the process to the community. The PTA will also share ideas and materials to other schools in the area.
Village of Takoma Park: Parents of Special Needs Adults
To help fund a grassroots group of parents and others who are caregivers for adults with special needs. The participants live in the greater Takoma park area. They are organizing to get support from local and county government for affordable and supportive housing, therapeutic safety and jobs.
