Community Dollars Program Marches On

The young people who are participating in the Foundation’s Community Dollars program were front and center as we marched in Takoma Park’s Independence Day parade. The goal of the program is to fund a public improvement in an underserved neighborhood.

For over a year, more than a dozen students from local middle and high schools have met regularly to brainstorm ideas, strategize and design budgets. In the next phase there will be a community vote to determine which idea goes forward.

The 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award Goes To…

At our annual Azalea Awards ceremony on June 10th we honored local residents who go above and beyond in service to our community. Of special note, Jackie Frazier received the Lifetime Achievement award. For several years Jackie has been the organizer of a food pantry, a homework club, rides to the doctor and the MLK celebration. She is also the founder of the free summer academic program Lunch and Learn. Ask students what they want to do in their futures, and many will say, “I want to be like Miss Jackie.”

Seeing Double?

This year, we’re betting that Twice is Nice! Beerfest—a.k.a. Takoma’s Favorite Night Out—is back again as a special second edition of what is traditionally an annual fundraiser. The Takoma VFW will again host the event, which takes place on Sunday, October 8th, 3–7pm. As always, craft beer from local breweries and brats hot off the barbie will be aplenty. Come join your friends and neighbors for a fun evening of socializing and supporting your community. See you there!
