  • Educator (school staffer who makes a difference)
  • School activist (a parent who brings the best to our schools)
  • Arts leader (someone who contributes to a dynamic arts community)
  • Coach (keeps sports vibrant and accessible)
  • Business leader (promotes progressive spirit through local commerce)
  • Green activist (turns environmental ideals into achievements)
  • Neighborhood volunteer ("walks the walk" to make a great neighborhood even better)
  • Spirit (reflects local character with panache)
  • Tak-tivist (commits to civic leadership, year in, year out)

Submit nominations to Katya Partan (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or Howard Kohn (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Nominations should be 3-4 sentences in length and should describe clearly, with examples, why the person fits the category. Please include the nominee's email or phone number. The ballot editors reserve the right to edit your statements or combine statements in case of multiple nominations for a single nominee. Azalea winners from the last 4 years are not eligible for this year's award. Nominations close at midnight on Sunday, April 20, 2014.

Also, mark your calendar now for the "Celebrate Takoma" festival. This high-spirited event will take place Sunday, May 18, from 11:00 to 4:00 PM on Ed Wilhelm Field behind Piney Branch Elementary School, and will feature music, dancing, and food from all corners of the world we know as Takoma.

As part of "Celebrate Takoma" we'll learn the winners of the 2014 Azalea Awards and find out which community projects received grants from the Takoma Foundation this spring.
