Takoma Radio Wins FCC Approval
Two-time Foundation grantee Takoma Radio received an FCC Construction Permit in March, and Takoma Radio’s founders have targeted summer 2016 to start broadcasting.
Takoma Radio will be on the air at 94.3 FM with the call letters WOWD-LP.
The Foundation’s first grant was to help with an initial engineering and feasibility study. Our second grant helped the WOWD purchase portable recording equipment for its “Talking Takoma” interview and storytelling series.
It’s a tremendous achievement to be selected for an FCC license, as so far only 13 hyper-local radio stations have been selected from among more than 3,000 applicants. The good news for Takoma Radio is attributed to the strong programming mission and the extensive local support for the station and its partner organization, Historic Takoma.
Local voices and local programming planned for WOWD include music, stories, interviews, history, community events, festival coverage and other expressions of life in Takoma Park and surrounding D.C. and suburban Maryland neighborhoods.
