Barker Foundation Adoption Workshop at TPES

Adoption AwarenessMore than 60 teachers and staff of TPES gathered on an October morning to learn about Adoption Awareness from the Barker Adopotion Foundation. While some still sipped coffee, Barker's impressive Director of Post Adopt and Family Services led them through a thoughtful, personal, knowledgeable presentation on how to integrate positive adoption language in their classrooms, how to handle tricky assignments, and how many of these same techniques work when addressing any type of "out of the ordinary" family structure (though we all agreed that in Takoma Park, out of the ordinary can be the norm!)

Based on the feedback and reactions, this was clearly just the start of a much bigger conversation -- and filling a bigger need within the school and community. But such an important conversation to start. And thanks to Takoma Foundation's support, each staff member and teacher left with a folder containing additional resources they can use and ways to adapt classroom assignments (did you know you can create a Family Circle instead of a Family Tree?!)
