You can still buy a brick!

We hope you're enjoying the new Takoma Park Community Center! The Takoma Foundation raised more than $150,000 to pay for the furnishings -- the kiln, computers, digital video mixers, and all the tables and chairs.

Most of the $150,000 for the Community Center came from you, either as a direct contribution, or through the purchase of red bricks inscribed with personal messages. Nearly 250 signature bricks are now paved into the front walkway.

But there is room for more bricks with more personal messages! The sale of these bricks, at $125 apiece, will continue into the foreseeable future, and each will be added to the walkway. The next installation will take place in spring.

The bricks match a Victorian facade that has transformed the municipal center into an architectural landmark. Inside the center is a spacious array of rooms for a variety of community activities -- from mentoring to karate to chess to aerobics to concerts to meetings. There is a "quiet" reading room, a lab with public computers, a hands-on arts room, a performance hall and a three-story atrium for exhibiting local artwork.

Additional rooms include a "loud" room with game tables, a gathering spot with comfy sofas, and a dance room with a wooden floor.

By purchasing a brick or giving a donation to the Foundation you will help buy ping-pong tables, dance mats, games and other furnishings for these new rooms.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a community legacy. We're thrilled to be a part of it. Join the effort and you'll see how good it feels when you walk through the front doors.

If your organization would like to be recognized for helping to build the Community Center, or if you have a special interest in one of these rooms, contact us at kohn@erols.com so we can discuss how you can help. Or, print out a membership form and send it to us. Thanks for your help!
